What is a Bierkassenfahrt?

Four times a year we cast off. Different breweries every time, new beers, a new theme — and always Hamburg seen from the water. No two trips are the same. One thing never changes: the beer is always freshly tapped.

Think of it as a brewery tour that runs across the water instead of through a brewhouse. Three hours by barge through the port of Hamburg, past the Speicherstadt and the Landungsbrücken, out onto the Elbe and back again. The casks travel with us and are tapped throughout. Beer on the water, rather than at a bar under strip lighting.

And there’s a bit of harbour chat thrown in: along the way we tell you what you’re passing – the Speicherstadt, the Elbphilharmonie, Övelgönne and whatever else lines the banks. Not a guided tour with a microphone on all the time, more like friends chatting at the rail. You’ll leave the boat knowing Hamburg a little better than before.

Who is behind it

The Bierkassenfahrt is run by IT'S A WRAP Brewing Company from Hamburg and by Mister Bierzeps. For each trip we put together a selection from several breweries: mostly from Hamburg and the region around it, every so often something from further afield. At least six different beers, from helles through IPA to stout, and always something alcohol-free. Which breweries are on board and what the focus is appears in the schedule well beforehand.

Tickets

Tickets are digital only. At the pier, the ticket on your phone is all you need.

Number of tickets

Payment: Handled by our shop, tickets arrive by email.
Returns: Up to 14 days before the trip. After that you can pass your ticket on to someone else.
Cancellation: If the trip has to be called off – because of a storm, say, or too few bookings – you get a full refund.
Withdrawal: German law grants no right of withdrawal for tickets to leisure events held on a fixed date (§ 312g (2) no. 9 BGB). Details in the Widerrufsbelehrung (German).

Good to know

Can I pass my ticket on?

Yes. Just send us the name of the person coming instead, any time up to the day before. The ticket is then in their name.

Do you sail on the Alster as well?

No. The Bierkassenfahrt is a harbour cruise: Speicherstadt, Landungsbrücken, the Elbe, the shipyards and Blankenese. Barges of this kind run in the port, not on the Alster lake. So if you are after an Alster cruise, we are the wrong people — if you want to see Hamburg from the water with a beer in hand, the right ones.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The barge is covered and heated, so rain is no reason to stay ashore. Only storms or ice stop us, and then you get a full refund.

Is there a toilet on board?

Yes, there is one on board.

Is the barge wheelchair accessible?

Boarding is over a gangway with steps, the deck itself is level. Get in touch before buying if you use a wheelchair or a walking frame — we will sort something out for you.

Can we sit together as a group?

Of course you can. For larger groups or a boat all to yourselves, just write to us.

Is this a good thing to do in Hamburg at night?

We think so. The trip runs in the evening through the port of Hamburg, past the Speicherstadt, the Landungsbrücken and out onto the Elbe, with the city lights on the water. It is an evening boat trip and a night out in one, without having to find a bar afterwards.

Can we book it for a stag or hen do?

Of course. A stag or hen do on the barge works well: Hamburg from the water, beer from the cask, and nobody has to drive. Book your tickets together in one order so you sit together. Just remember that you share the boat with other guests — celebrate, but with consideration for everyone on board. If you want the whole barge to yourselves, write to us about a private charter.

Is it a beer tasting or a harbour cruise?
